THIS LISTING IS FOR A LOVELY ROYAL COPENHAGEN PORCELAIN FIGURINE FAUN (PAN/SATYR) HOLDING A FLUTE AND SITTING ON A PILLAR WITH SQUIRREL AT BASE, #456.
SCULPTED BY CHRISTIAN THOMSEN AND ISSUED IN 1924 AND RETIRED IN 1934.
THIS ATTRACTIVE FIGURINE IS FROM THE "FAIRY TALES, TROLLS AND FAUNS" SERIES.
THE FIGURINE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS, CRACKS OR REPAIRS.
MEASURES 8 1/2" HIGH AND THE BASE IS 3 1/4" IN DIAMETER.
MARKED WITH THE ROYAL COPENHAGEN TRADEMARK STAMP, "DENMARK", ARTIST INITIALS "IVX" AND NUMBER "456".
THESE POPULAR ROYAL COPENHAGEN PORCELAIN FIGURINES OF FAUNS ARE COLLECTED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. A FAUN IS CHARACTERIZED  AS BEING A MIX OF HUMAN AND ANIMAL WITH A HUMAN TORSO AND A HAIRY LOWER BODY WITH HOOFED FEET. FAUNS ARE CREATURES FROM CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY. THEY DESCEND FROM THE GOD FAUNUS AND ARE CALLED FAUNI IN LATIN AND ARE THE EQUIVALENT OF THE GREEK SATYRS DESCENDANTS FROM THE GREEK GOD PAN. USUALLY FAUNS AND SATYRS ARE DEPICTED AS HALF HUMAN WITH HORNS AND POINTED EARS WITH THE LOWER BODY OF A GOAT.
