Description

A fine 19th century German Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur KPM porcelain painted plaque (5 3/4" X 4 1/8"), depicting an old and a young lady in a most intimate moment.  Stamped with Sceptre mark, impressed K.P.M., initial "S" and dimensions.
At the end of the second world war the Berlin porcelain factory was partly destroyed. During the rebuilding production was moved temporarily to a factory located in Selb. Berlin porcelain produced during this period is marked with the sceptre mark and the initial ‘S’.
The Royal Porcelain Manufacture Berlin (KPM) was founded in 1763 by Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Its actual origins, however, lie in three private enterprises, which, under crown patronage, were trying to establish the production of white gold (porcelain) in Berlin from the mid-18th century onwards. Each KPM painter was an outstanding master in painting on porcelain. More than 80 porcelain plaques are part of the internationally renowned porcelain collection of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
